The Metropolitan State University of Denver Community Supporting Agriculture (CSA) Workday will take place at Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms. MSU Denver volunteers will work directly with CSA staff to help with a variety of projects in the Market Garden. These projects may include path making, mulching, soil preparation and transplanting. All crops grown in the Market Garden support food desert communities in the metro region including low income families and the local food community at large.

Field work is hard work. All volunteers should be comfortable working outdoors in open areas, fluctuating temperatures and the elements. All volunteers should also be able to stand, bend, kneel and sit for extended periods of time (>1hr).

There is very little shade in and around the Market Garden. Volunteers should dress in layers and wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Volunteers should also bring a hat, water bottle, sun screen and work gloves. Extra work gloves will be available.

Extreme Community Makeover coordinates volunteer teams to partner with underserved people to improve their own homes and neighborhoods. These projects build safer environments; cultivate community among residents, neighborhoods, and networks of local resource providers; and connect residents to a permanent path towards healthy, hopeful, and stable lives. ECM is designed to invite volunteers into a partnership with residents of specific Denver neighborhoods to complete home and neighborhood improvement projects. These projects include graffiti removal, landscaping, painting, yard work, or other projects identified by the residents. Equally important as fences that are built are the relationships being built—between the volunteers and community members, among the neighbors on a block, and between the community and resources in their neighborhood.

MSU Denver volunteers will help with La Alma/Lincoln Park neighborhood clean-up and refurbishment. MSU Denver volunteers will meet at His Love Fellowship, 910 Kalamath Street, Denver, 80204

The MSU Denver team lead for this project is Cory Phare.

MSU Denver volunteers will help install privacy curtains in Clínica Tepeyac’s 10 exam rooms. The curtains will be hung from the ceiling. The curtains will provide patients with privacy when providers or other staff enter or exit the exam room. General volunteer skills and volunteers with some “handy person” skills will be helpful e.g. using a drill while on a step-ladder. Volunteers will also help to assemble the curtains and this does not require specific skills.

MSU Denver volunteers will help keep the nearby Cherry Creek riverway and connected park clean by picking up trash and debris. MSU Denver volunteers will also complete surveys to collect information on what types of trash and debris are in our parks and waterways, which will provide the Greenway Foundation valuable information on how to prevent the trash deposits. The Greenway Foundation will have trash grabbers and gloves, but encourages MSU Denver volunteers to bring their own gloves if they have them. Please also bring a full water bottle, closed-toed shoes, clothes that could get dirty, and weather appropriate gear (sunscreen, hat, coat, etc.). MSU Denver volunteers will meet at Fishback Park (818 Water St) and then walk up towards the Cherry Creek from there. There is a small parking lot located there as well.

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
MSU Denver volunteers will help with the Newborns In Need program. Our volunteers will assist in assembling the Warm Welcome Bags that Denver Health gives all the mothers who give birth here.

Denver Health’s Newborns in Need benefits every single family that delivers at Denver Health. Financially struggling families often must choose between diapers or groceries, so these gifts help give them a great start and make life sweeter for some of Denver’s tiniest and most vulnerable citizens. Every single baby born at in our hospital goes home with a “Warm Welcome Bag”. Newborns in Need program comes to the rescue for expecting families who are struggling to make ends meet. Thanks to generous donors, we collect thousands of new baby items to fill our “Warm Welcome” bags. Then we give these bags to new moms and dads who really need and appreciate this extra help.

Address:
777 Bannock St
Denver, CO 80204

Please remember to dress accordingly as we will be working outdoors - rain, snow or shine. Coffee and breakfast pastries will be provided by Food for Thought.
